Here's a grand old canopy bed set that I found on Utube and thought it might offer a few ideas.

King Size Canopy Beds

Welcome to my little blog about king size canopy beds. I absolutely love these regal and imposing pieces of furniture. They are such a throw back into our past when where you slept and what you slept in were more important than the car you drove, because there weren't any cars back then! These are the beds of kings and queens and of course you like the king sized version, good so do I.

Please don't think that because you once spent a wonderful weekend i some lavish hotel, where you rolled around in the luxury of a four poster bed that it's definitely a good idea to buy one for your home. The purpose of this blog isn't to sell you a king sized bed, in fact, you're more likely to find me warning you off from buying this piece of furniture. This is because that a canopy bed is a big imposing piece and just not suitable for every household. It may have looked great in the hotel but is it going to work in your cramped apartment. Possibly not.

Iron King Canopy Bed

If you want to try something really unique why not look around for an iron famed king sized canopy bed? Wrought iron frames have a really European feel about them. They still have a stately feel to them as you would expect but it's a style that seems more reminiscent of somewhere like Italy. I recently saw a beautiful example, of this type of bed, which was from Tuscany. It had some really elegant curves to it and a very delicate quality to it.

The iron frame either was rusting from old age or had been distressed to look like it was old. Either way that muddy brown coloring that you get when iron has oxidised and started to turn the metal brown, was a really attractive feature of the bed. Also as the frame was made with rounded thin iron it looked really stylish and not too overbearing which can sometimes be a criticism of and enormously grand wooden four poster bed.

King Bed Canopies

If you are going to put a full kingsized canopy bed into your house you would be well advised to think carefully about whether it really requires a king bed canopy to go with it. A large four poster is quite impressive enough on its own. Adding the full on canopy curtains, whether in a heavy rich fabric or light and breezy netting might just be over kill. Having said that it really depends what kind of final effect you are trying to create.

Does the rest of your interior decoration demand that you finish everything off just so? If the rest of your bedroom is in a grand style then you can probably get away with it. If however your room has a bit more of a minimalist look going on then you might be better off forgetting about adding further drapes etc. Remember also that king bed canopies will, to some extent hide the frame of the bed and if you've spent a good deal of money on that it would be a shame to cover it up.

King Size Canopy Bed Frame

I'm not sure that I'm such a big fan of king size canopy bed frames. If you want to just buy a frame to put over your bed I think that it's more acceptable with a twin bed or day bed and certainly fine for kids beds. I just think it looks a little cheap with a full sized bed. When you choose a full sized four poster you're really making a big statement and what does that statement say if you haven't gone all the way and bought the real thing?

To me it says that you like the idea, you want to look like you deserve a grand bed but you can't really afford it so you've had to settle for adding a makeshift frame over your bed. If you do decide to go down this road then I would certainly suggest making sure that the bed frame looks and indeed is classy. Something in quality hard wood maybe, definitely not a cheap iron version. This is a situation where you will probably want to add a canopy cover.

California King Canopy Bed

So what are you looking for in your bed? Width or length? A king sized bed confusingly enough comes in two different sizes! A standard king or a California King canopy bed. The standard version is four inches wider while the California is four inches longer. Personally as I'm not that tall and like to roll around I prefer extra width but clearly if you're over six foot you'll want as much length as you can get. How ridiculous to buy such a regal bed only to have your feet stick out the end. Not very king like at all!

In the end your decision over these two sizes may not come down not to your own dimensions at all but rather the size and shape of your room and your existing sheets and bedding. Hope fully if you're considering a king sized four poster you've made sure your bedroom is roomy enough to take it, but if there are any space issues work out where you can afford to spare those extra four inches. Similarly check what sized fitted sheets you already have so that the fit the shape of this new bed.
